Fuel cost for a trip
Estimate fuel cost from the distance, the fuel economy, and the price you type. Miles or kilometers, gallons or litres. Tolls are added once.
How the trip cost is built
In miles per gallon, divide the miles by the economy you type. That is gallons. Multiply gallons by the price per gallon. Add the tolls you typed. A round trip doubles the distance first. Tolls stay as a single number so you can type the whole trip’s tolls once.
In litres per 100 km, multiply that economy by the kilometres and divide by 100. That is litres. Multiply by the price per litre. Kilometres and miles meet at 1.609344 kilometres per mile. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres. Switching the unit buttons converts the number you already typed. Switching country does not apply an exchange rate. The USD or CAD label follows the header switch. The Canada starting example is 1,931 km at 34.6 L/100 km. The price in that example is a number you can replace. It is not a pump quote and not a conversion of a US gallon price.
The total leaves out diesel exhaust fluid, fuel burned at idle, and any distance that was not in the box. Hills, wind, and a loaded trailer change the economy. Type the economy you have been seeing, not the one in a brochure. The result is not a tax number and not a settlement.
