Best 12V fridges for truckers (2026)

"Best" here means the published specs fit a sleeper. A portable compressor fridge is the right class of product if you want food colder than a warm cab. A thermoelectric cooler, the kind that often looks like a small ice chest with a fan, usually only pulls the inside down some degrees below the air around it. In a closed summer cab that is not refrigeration.
What has to fit before the brand matters
Measure the floor you can actually give up, with the lid open. A chest fridge is a box in the aisle, on the passenger floor, or strapped beside the bunk. The handle width counts. Dometic's own dimension tables include the handles.
Then answer three power questions:
- Does the 12V socket stay live with the key off? Many trucks drop accessory power when the key is off. A fridge on that socket only runs while the key is on.
- What else is on that fuse? A compressor starting while a coffee maker is brewing is a common way to pop it.
- Are you allowed to add a wire to the batteries? On a company truck, assume no until someone with authority says yes.
A loose 40-pound box is a bad thing in a hard stop. Strap it, or use the mounting points the maker lists. Do not drill a truck you do not have permission to modify.
Published figures
Inch sizes for the Dometic models below are conversions from the millimeter figures Dometic prints. One inch is 25.4 mm. Where sellers disagree, the cell says so.
Swipe this table sideways. The page stays put, and the first column stays visible.
| Model | Capacity | Outside size | Weight | Power | Cab note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dometic CFX3 45 | 46 L | about 15.7 × 27.3 × 18.7 in | 41.2 lb | 12/24 V DC, rated 8.2 A; also 100–240 V AC | Single zone. Lab average about 1.03 Ah/h at 32°C room and 4°C inside |
| Dometic CFX3 25 | 25 L | about 13.5 × 22.4 × 16.5 in, handles included | 13.4 kg (about 30 lb) | 12/24 V DC, 6.5 A rated at 12 V; AC mains on the same series table | The smaller floor. Not a week's groceries |
| ICECO VL45 | 45 L (about 47 qt) | 27.4 × 15.8 × 19.2 in on VL45 manual listings | about 49–51 lb, listings differ | 12/24 V DC. AC range is inconsistent across listings | Metal cabinet. Heavier to lift in and out |
| Engel MT45F-U1 | 43 qt (about 41 L) | 25.5 × 14.3 × 20 in; the sheet does not label which side is height | 52.9 lb | 12/24 V DC and 110/120 V AC on the US MT-series guide. Fact sheet lists 0.7–2.5 A and a 10 A fuse | Steel chest. Lowest amp range in this table |
Dometic CFX3 45
Dometic lists the CFX3 45 as a 46-liter single-zone compressor cooler and freezer. On the product page the box is 398 mm wide, 694 mm deep, and 476 mm high, and it weighs 18.7 kg (41.23 lb). It takes 12/24 V DC or 100–240 V AC, with a rated DC input current of 8.2 A. The same page lists a lab energy figure of 1.03 amp-hours per hour at 12 V when the room is 32°C and the inside is held at 4°C, with Bluetooth on.
That lab is milder than a closed cab in July. Dometic's CFX3 manual also says the coldest listed temperature cannot be reached if the air around a CFX3 45 is above 32°C (90°F). Treat the amp-hour number as a floor, not a promise for a Texas parking lot.
Dometic lists Bluetooth, a USB port at 5 V / 2 A, a drain, and M6 threaded inserts in the base. The manual also documents Wi-Fi on the CFX3 line. An app does not make the box colder. It does mean another radio to pair.
A series tech sheet lists the temperature span as +10°C to −22°C, and says a setting of −18°C is the practical floor for normal use. It is one compartment. Fridge or freezer, not both at once.

Dometic CFX3 25, and the CFX3 35 trap
The CFX3 35 is not the way to save floor space. Dometic lists it at the same 398 × 694 mm footprint as the 45. It is shorter (407 mm) and it holds 36 L instead of 46 L. You give up ten liters and keep the same floor.
The CFX3 25 is the one that shrinks the footprint. In Dometic's technical data table it is 25 liters, 342 × 569 × 420 mm including handles, and 13.4 kg, with a 12 V rated current of 6.5 A. Cooling capacity on that table is −22°C to +10°C. That is a drink-and-a-few-meals box, not a rolling pantry.
ICECO VL45
Manual and retailer listings for the VL45 cluster around 45 liters, an outside size of 27.4 × 15.8 × 19.2 inches, a metal cabinet, and a SECOP compressor. The temperature span those listings repeat is 0°F to 50°F (−18°C to 10°C). Weight is the messy cell: some pages say 48.5 lb, the manual transcription says 50.6 lb. Plan on lifting about 50 pounds, and read the carton.
The floor is in the same neighborhood as a CFX3 45. You are not buying a dramatically smaller chest. You are buying a metal shell and a different compressor brand. AC voltage is where listings fight. One manual text says 110–120 V and tells you to ask ICECO if you need a cord for 200–240 V. Other shops print 110–240 V. Read the label before you plug it into shore power.
It is still one zone, with a max mode and an eco mode on the listings, and a three-step battery cutoff. Use the higher cutoff if the fridge shares the starting battery.
Engel MT45F-U1
The US MT-series owner's guide covers the MT45F-U1 as a 43-quart dual-voltage chest: 120 V AC and 12/24 V DC, and it says the power supply switches between them. A long-standing MT45 fact sheet lists 52.9 lb, inside 15.4 × 10.8 × 16.4 inches, outside 25.5 × 14.3 × 20 inches, a draw of 0.7–2.5 A, a 10 A external fuse, and a detachable DC lead. Engel's technical sheet calls the MT45 cabinet powder-coated steel and describes the brand's swing compressor.
The fact sheet's "below 0°F" line is vaguer than Dometic's degree span. Confirm the thermostat range on the current unit. The outside dimensions are not labeled as height versus depth, so do not assume it is the low one until you see the carton next to the bunk.
The owner's guide says the DC cord for this size plugs into a cigarette-lighter socket. That is a lower draw than the Dometic's rated 8.2 A, which is the practical reason people look at an Engel. It is still a shared socket. Pull the plug when you are done, which the same guide tells you to do, or the battery can sit and drain.
Forty-three quarts is a bit under the CFX3 45's 46 liters. You are trading a little space and a lot of app features for a steel box and a lower listed amp range. We are not repeating road stories about swing compressors. The published difference is the compressor style and the amp line on the fact sheet.
Power, in plain arithmetic
A rated current and an average current are different jobs. The rated figure is what the fuse has to survive when the compressor is pulling hard. The average is closer to what a battery loses over a day, and only in the climate the lab used.
Dometic's 1.03 Ah per hour, held for 24 hours, is about 25 amp-hours a day at those lab temperatures. A truck starting battery is not a house bank. Using the higher battery-protection setting, if the fridge offers one, makes an accidental overnight drain less likely. It can also shut the fridge off sooner. That is the trade.
If you also want a 12V coffee maker or anything on an inverter, add those amps before you assume one socket can feed the cab. A 156 W coffee maker is about 13 A at 12 V all by itself.
Dometic's 1.03 Ah per hour is a lab figure. Put your own hours into the fridge draw calculator before you treat a starting battery as a house bank.
How to choose from the floor plan
- If the aisle is the constraint, compare footprints. The CFX3 25 is the small one. The CFX3 35 is not.
- If you can give up a roughly 16 × 28 inch footprint and you want AC plus DC and a published lab draw, the CFX3 45 is the spec-heavy plastic chest.
- If you want a metal cabinet in that same size class, read the VL45 label yourself and decide if the weight is a fair trade.
- If the socket fuse and a low listed amp draw matter more than an app, price the US Engel MT45F-U1 and check that the unlabeled 20-inch side still fits under the bunk rail with the lid open.
Built-in drawer fridges for sleeper cabinets are a different product. This note is about portable chests. If the truck already has a fridge cutout, measure that hole instead of parking a chest in the walkway.
Along the way

Conclusion
Pick the footprint first and the brand second. A chest that blocks the aisle is the wrong chest, even when the lab number looks good.
FAQ
Does the CFX3 35 save floor space over the 45?
No. Dometic lists the same 398 by 694 millimeter floor. The 35 is shorter and holds less.
Will any 12 volt socket run it overnight?
Only if that socket stays powered with the key off. Many trucks drop accessory power when the key is off.
